(which he usually cooks because A: he's good at it, B: he sees it as a necessary break from studying, and C: I usually don't feel like cooking because when I cook I make a big production out of it and look up a recipe, use all of the pots and pans, and listen to This American Life or Snap Judgement on NPR - all of which are not conducive to a quiet, study environment...or so Chris claims), we eat together, I do the dishes, and then I go back upstairs to busy myself with reading or more Internet surfing. Sometimes I grade papers, but then I realize that I'm not getting paid overtime for that work so that usually comes to a quick halt. Weekends during finals are about the same, except I find other ways to entertain myself, thanks to friends.
But this past Friday was different! Chris and I went out - together. One of the fifth grade teachers I work with invited us to a wine-tasting party at her house in Cutler Bay and Chris agreed to go. On our way there we stopped by our local liquor store for a bottle of wine. I followed my standard rules for selecting wine I haven't previously tasted and decided on a Francis Ford Coppola Cabernet called Director's. Once we arrived at the party, the hostess wrapped the bottle in Christmas paper and put it alongside the other thirteen wrapped up bottles (also known as what I want Santa to leave me under the Christmas tree) in preparation for the blind wine-tasting. We took our seats outside, strategically choosing the chairs closest to the bread and Manchego and Brie plate, and patiently awaited the first taste. Our thorough hosts went as far as creating tasting score cards for us to score the wines and guess the varietals.

This is how another blogger describes it: "Lighter than anticipated, this ruby-hued wine opened with whiffs of cherries, blackberries and faint pepper. Soft and supple in the mouth, it sipped of juicy red fruit, stewed plums and light toast. Despite weak tannins and a quick finish, it held its own when paired with a sturdy dish of pot roast and root vegetables. This Cab would also pair nicely with chicken. (The wine benefited from leaving the uncorked bottle sitting on the counter for a few hours; it gained some depth and thus is recommended for decanting or aeration.)"
I definitely wasn't paying attention to the tannins (because I don't exactly understand what it means) and I thought the finish was long, but other than that I think it's a fair assessment of the wine. I paired it with lasagna and it was delicious. But I think water with lasagna is delicious so, again, I'm not the best judge of wine. All I know for sure is that it was good and I wanted more.
